PREPRESS - WEB OFFSET PRINTING

Creating PDF files

The first step in making PDFs from QuarkXPress for Windows 2000 is to make sure that a PostScript printer driver is installed and configured to print to disk. The instructions on this page detail the necessary steps to do so. First, click the Start button and go to "Settings -> Printers -> Add Printer". This will start the Add Printer Wizard.

On the first screen, select Local Printer, and make sure that "Automatically Detect and Install my Plug and Play printer" is NOT checked. Click the "Next" button.

The next screen will ask what port to use for the new printer. Scroll down until you see the "FILE:" port and select it. Click the "Next" button.

The next screen will ask what driver to use for the new printer. Almost any color driver that supports a media type larger than your trim size should work. We have had lots of success using the Textronix Phaser 300i driver. To select it, scroll down under Manufacturers until you see "Tektronix" and select it. Next, scroll down under printers until you see "Tektronix Phaser 300i". Select it, and click the "Next" button.

Next, Windows asks if you want to print a test page to the printer. Click on "No" and click the "Next" button. If Windows asks if you want to share the printer, click on "No" and click the "Next" button.

Finally, Windows displays the confirmation window showing you all the parameters of your new printer driver. Click the "Finish" button, and the installation will complete.

Now that the driver is installed, the next step will be to configure the Distiller job options.
